Catalog Description
Sociolinguistics. Macro linguistics analysis. Discourse. Pragmatics. Speech acts. Language and culture. Language and society. Regional and social variation. Language and gender. Sociolinguistic issues from social, cultural, and linguistic perspectives.
Course Objectives

This course aims to help students to make connections between language and society as well as language and culture. It presents the theories of pragmatics and discourse including speech acts and markers. It further aims to discuss sociolinguistic matters such as dialectal differences, social class differences, language and gender including sexism, taboo, jargon. 

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

 

        1. recognize social and regional language variation,

        2. discuss language use in relation to society and culture,

        3. evaluate materials focusing on sociolinguistic matters,

        4.  analyze the socially and culturally bounded linguistic landscapes,

        5. evaluate other theoretical underpinnings of sociolinguistics and apply

            them to educational contexts.
