This course aims to support students to develop an in-depth understanding of social studies curriculum implemented in Turkey. It aims to develop students’ knowledge about the concepts in curriculum development, approaches to curriculum development, and definitions and foundations of curriculum. It is designed to help students analyze the main components of social studies curriculum implemented in 4th grade in Turkey. The course aims to support students’ academic growth in developing exemplary activities and practices for effective social studies education. It further aims to develop students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes to apply those activities and practices effectively and foster their critical thinking and reflection skills for a successful social studies education. Lastly, the course is designed to encourage students to construct a broader perspective of social studies education by helping them analyze the social studies curricula that are implemented in other countries.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- analyze the main components of social studies curriculum (4th grade) in Turkey,
- discuss the history of social studies education in Turkey,
- evaluate social studies education around the world,
- develop exemplary activities for implementing social studies curriculum in primary education,
- develop higher-order thinking skills for effective implementation of social studies curriculum,
- discuss the current issues in social studies education.
