Catalog Description
The definition and conceptualization of intercultural communication as a communicative and pedagogical tool in education. Misconceptions of intercultural communication. Barriers of intercultural communication and educational strategies to remove the barriers. Policy and international projects in relation to intercultural communication. Approaches commonly used in intercultural communication. Sustainable peace development, democracy and advocacy in teaching intercultural communication to students, and school community. Whole school approach for improving harmony among diverse student groups in the school.
Course Objectives

This course aims to prepare students to engage in effective communication with social actors such as administrators, parents, teachers, students and school staff in the educational settings though the use of intercultural communication skills. It also explores sustainable peace practices based on case analysis and self-reflection to promote a sense of democracy to address the needs of diverse student groups.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Recognize the principles of intercultural communication and sustainable peace as communicative and pedagogical tools in education to foster inclusive classrooms,
  2. Explain the relationship between sustainable peace and intercultural communication in education in classroom practices,
  3. Formulate creative solutions to address the needs of diverse student groups in classrooms,
  4. Discuss the intentional and unintentional use of traditional norms, practices and opinions that blocks intercultural communication among peers and other stakeholders in schools,
  5. Evaluate their assumptions and ideas about intercultural communication and prepare strategies to cope with feelings sensitive to their concerns and opinions,
  6. Produce intercultural action plans to be implemented in classroom settings to disseminate the culture of sustainable peace.
