Catalog Description
Basic principles and instrument characteristics. Measurement errors, basic statistics, noise and its control. Dynamic characteristics of instruments, time and frequency domain responses. System identification with correlation techniques. Amplifiers, filters, analog-to-digital and digital-to-analog converters. Position, strain, pressure and motion sensors. Flow sensors.
Course Objectives

This course aims to introduce students design and operation of measurement instruments with a particular emphasis on medical instrumentation for physiological measurements.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
(1) Define the components of a measurement system, performance criteria, methods for statistical analysis of measurement data, medical measurement constraints, and sources of noise,
(2) Explain principles, rationales, and designs of sensors used in medical instrumentation,
(3) Demonstrate various circuit designs based on amplifiers used for processing signals measured by sensors,
(4) Classify the various forms of bioelectric signals originating from the body,
(5) Consider different diagnostic measurement methods for the identification of humane biopotentials and their necessary instrumentation,
(6) Develop a medical measurement instrument by selecting the appropriate electrode and sensor, and designing an electronic circuit.
