The main objective of this course is to make students understand the global environmental issues and sustainable development goals and relate these with contemporary building practices. The course explores architectural and urban design strategies that embrace ecological and climatic inputs to reduce the negative environmental impact of building production, operation, and demolition. To do so, the course introduces sustainable design principles applicable to site planning, conceptual mass development, building envelope design, and material selection. Students are expected to get acquainted with the criteria and procedures for green building assessment.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. Discuss global environmental issues and sustainable development goals in relation to the built environment and contemporary building practices,
2. Define the role and responsibility of the architect in producing sustainable environments,
3. Identify sustainable design strategies for different architectural and urban scales,
4. Apply sustainable design principles to site planning, conceptual mass development, building envelope design, and material selection,
5. Assess the criteria for green building.
