Catalog Description
Building fundamental understanding and monitoring skills for economic and financial market data. Use of major domestic and international economic and financial market data sources. Assessing international financial structure by analysing sovereign, FX, equity, commodity, and industry market data. Data handling and analysis in MS Excel.
Course Objectives

Bringing real world data and improving data handling skills would accelerate learning as well as closing the gap between the theory and application for students. Establishing a new vein of applied and interactive learning experience is another objective.  Augmenting conceptual background with much valued application, comprising data identification, collection, and problem solving is targeted. Lastly intriguing students for further investigation to help in their respective field of interests in banking/finance.

Course Learning Outcomes

At the end of this course, students will be able to;

  1. Learn fundamental international financial indicators for selected markets (sovereign debt market, money markets, banking, FX, commodity) and develop a broader perspective of international economic and financial issues.
  2. Develop skills to compile and extract data from data service providers as well as open sources.
  3. Conduct basic statistical analysis on financial data. Compare returns, rates and risks. Calculate index series and use the yield curve to infer investor’s expectations about the level of short term interest rates in the future.
  4. Gain hands-on experience in Excel and develop Excel skills related to financial tools.
  5. Build a bridge between theory and economic and financial facts and observations.
