Catalog Description
Basic concepts related to sign language; Turkish sign language, history and characteristics; letters in Turkish sign language; phonology, the internal structure of sign, synchrony and concatenation, hand alphabet in terms of phonology, morphology in sign language, syntax; word order, sentence types; interrogative sentences in sign language; semantics, meaning and reference, types of meaning, idioms in sign language; conversation with the Turkish sign language.
Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to enable students to gain the ability to use Turkish sign language at basic level and to communicate with hearing impaired individuals when necessary in social life.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

  1. Define the basic terms about the Turkish sign language.
  2. Comprehend Turkish sign language alphabet, basic concepts of sign language, history and characteristics of Turkish sign language; the letters of the Turkish sign language, properties of the Turkish sign language related to phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics.
  3. Develop knowledge and skills for information and communication using sign language.
