This course aims to provide a practical overview of qualitative research in psychology for beginners. It introduces a theoretical discussion of various approaches to qualitative research with particular focus on basic thematic approach. A further goal of this course is to outline strategic tips and skills for conducting a successful qualitative research (including planning and design, data collection, analysis, quality criteria, and reporting). Employing a “patterns framework" to qualitative data analysis (i.e., thematic analysis), students will be introduced a clear and comprehensive guide for processes and practices involved in qualitative research. The course also aims to enable students explore different examples of how qualitative research is used in the field of psychology and gain hands-on experience in conducting qualitative research.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
1. describe processes and practices involved in conducting a successful qualitative research.
2. identify various theoretical and analytical approaches to qualitative research.
3. employ different techniques for data collection and analysis in qualitative research.
4. differentiate between qualitative and quantitative research methodology.
5. develop writing skills for reporting qualitative research in psychology.
6. evaluate qualitative research with regard to ethical principles and critical thinking.
