Catalog Description
Definition, scope and types of trauma (natural disasters, human-created traumas, proxy trauma, secondary trauma, etc.). Reactions of children, adolescents and adults after traumatic events, and factors affecting individual, familial and social consequences of trauma experience. Causes of trauma. Possible psychological disorders (post-traumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder, etc.). The trauma approaches and intervention methods to prevent negative effects on humans. Legal issues related to trauma, basics, qualifications and competencies of counselors working with trauma-related cases.
Course Objectives
The main objectives of this course are; definition, scope and types of trauma (natural disasters, human-created traumas, proxy trauma, secondary trauma, etc.); reactions that can be seen in children, adolescents and adults after trauma and factors affecting individual, familial and social consequences of trauma experience, causes of trauma possible psychological disorders (post-traumatic stress disorder, acute stress disorder, etc.); the trauma approaches and intervention methods to prevent negative effects on humans; state policies related to trauma and legal aspects to be considered when working with trauma victims basics, qualifications and competences of the counselor who will work with traumatized persons.
Course Learning Outcomes
- describe the post-trauma intervention,
- design helping strategies based on various traumatic situations,
- identify the skills and competencies of professionals working with trauma survivors and victims,
- apply some long-term intervention strategies with the help of concepts such as post-traumatic growth, resilience etc.,
- describe the legal issues in working with trauma cases.
