Catalog Description
The aim and basic principles of mathematics teaching. National primary school mathematics curriculum. NCTM and Common Core State Standards. Learning areas and sub-learning areas. Mathematical process standards- problem solving, reasoning, communication, connections, representations. Major learning theories and their implications for teaching mathematics. Assessment and evaluation in mathematics education. Development of the mathematical concepts in primary school mathematics curriculum including early number concepts, number sense, arithmetical operations, whole numbers, place value.
Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to provide students understanding of what it means to know and do mathematics and developing skills in teaching mathematical concepts  in primary school curriculum including early number concepts, number sense, arithmetical operations, whole numbers, place value.

  1. define content standards, process standards and standards of mathematical practice,
  2. connect learning theories to effective teaching practices in mathematics,
  3. critique mathematical tasks to determine if they promote problem solving and procedural fluency,
  4. design activities for the development of mathematical process skills,
  5. design mathematical tasks to assess students’ understanding in mathematics.
