This course aims to help students develop a comprehensive understanding of social studies (life studies) education in primary schools. It aims to develop students’ knowledge about the essential definitions, purpose, and foundations of social studies (life studies) education. It is designed to equip them with the essential knowledge, skills, and attitudes for effective planning of instruction in social studies (life studies) education. It further aims to support students in identifying effective instructional methods and techniques, instructional materials and tools, and assessment techniques in social studies (life studies) education. It is designed to help students analyze the main components of life studies curriculum across 1st to 3rd grades in Turkey. The course aims to support students’ academic growth in developing exemplary activities and practices for effective social studies (life studies) education. It aims to increase students’ knowledge and awareness on the current issues in social studies (life studies) education, including values and character education, democracy and citizenship education, and social studies (life studies) for diverse learners.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- discuss the essential concepts in social studies education,
- discuss the purpose of social studies education,
- identify the foundations (sources of content) for social studies education,
- analyze the main components of social studies (life studies) curriculum across 1st to 3rd grades in Turkey,
- evaluate effective social studies (life studies) education,
- develop exemplary activities for implementing social studies (life studies) curriculum in primary education,
- discuss the current issues in social studies education.
