Catalog Description
Listening strategies and conversational phrases. Authenticity in listening in various contexts. Fundamentals of pronunciation including vowels, consonants, word stress and intonation and phonetic transcriptions.
Course Objectives

The course aims to teach fundamental listening strategies. It aims to introduce the fundamentals of English pronunciation including the segmental and suprasegmental features. It also aims to teach the basic differences between English varieties.

Course Learning Outcomes

Upon the successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

 

  1. recognize the fundamentals and  intricacies of English pronunciation (i.e. different syllable types, characteristics of vowels and consonants, properties of articulation, primary and secondary word stress, prominence, rhythm and intonation),
  2. pronounce problematic sounds and words in English,
  3. formulate phonetic transcriptions of words and sentences in American and British English using the IPA (International Phonetic Alphabet),
  4. recognize varieties and phonetic differences in different contexts.
