This course is designed to introduce bilingualism, to lay out the characteristics of different types of bilingualism, discuss bilingualism as a matter in relation to cognition, psycholinguistics, educational policy, linguistic and literacy development. One goal is to compare bilingual practices in different circles of English, discuss linguistic, socio-cultural, and literacy aspects of bilingualism, analyze the social, political, and cultural issues related to bilingual education policy, analytically evaluate social, political, and cultural issues related to bilingualism at the societal level: ideology, identity, and empowerment, apply psycholinguistic, sociolinguistic and critical theory to analyze bilingualism and bilingual contexts in the world.
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- identify the characteristics of different types of bilingualism,
- discuss bilingualism in relation to cognition, psycholinguistics, educational policy, linguistic and literacy development,
- discuss linguistic, socio-cultural, and literacy aspects of bilingualism,
- analyze the social, political, and cultural issues related to bilingual education policy.
