Catalog Description
Fractions - student difficulties in learning fractions, different meanings of fractions, fraction models, equivalence, comparison, sorting, operations with fractions, decimal fractions. Geometry - development of geometric thinking in children, 2 and 3 dimensional geometry. Measurement - length, area, volume, time, weighing, money. Data management, tables and graphs. Instructional methods and strategies. Assessment and evaluation.
Course Objectives

The main objective of this course is to develop skills in teaching mathematical concepts in primary school curriculum including fractions, geometry, measurement and data.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

 

  1. describe mathematical concepts in primary school curriculum including fractions, geometry, measurement and data.
  2. critique mathematical tasks to determine if they promote problem solving and procedural fluency,
  3. develop a lesson plan that portrays hands-on and minds-on mathematical activities,
  4. develop exemplary activities for the development of mathematical process skills,
  5. design mathematical tasks to assess students’ understanding in mathematics.
