Catalog Description
Basic ecological concepts and principles. Ecosystems. Food chain food web. Habitat. Common living and mutual living. Energy flow. Matter flow. Population growth. Ecological impact of population, industrialization and consumption. Environmental problems and their solutions. Environmental awareness, sustainable development. Education for sustainable development. Environmental education in primary schools.
Course Objectives

The aim of this course is to inform undergraduate primary school students about basic environmental concepts, environmental problems and their solutions. In addition, students will explore the field of environmental education and will be able to implement environmental education in educational settings.

Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:

 

  1. identify the core ecological concepts and principles such as ecosystem, food chains, food webs, habitat, common living and mutual living, energy and matter flow, population growth,
  2. analyze the relationships among increasing population, consumption, industrialization and environmental problems,
  3. propose solutions to environmental problems,
  4. analyze the relationships among society-environment-economy,
  5. appraise the importance of environmental awareness, 
  6. explain the characteristics of primary school curricula with respect to environmental education,
  7. apply environmental education in educational settings.
