Catalog Description
The basics of developing a lesson plan. Teaching of the concepts in Numbers and Operations learning area in Mathematics Curriculum (natural numbers, operations with natural numbers, integers, factors and multiples, rules of divisibility, GCF and LCM concepts, ratio and proportion concepts, real numbers, exponents and roots, fractions, decimals, percentages, rational and irrational numbers, sets and basic concepts related to sets). Development of course content using appropriate teaching methods, process skills, instructional materials, assessment and evaluation strategies etc. Students' knowledge about these issues (students’ learning difficulties and misconceptions related to these concepts).
Course Objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with a deep understanding of a good quality instructional process of numbers and operations. By selecting and using several instructional materials; teaching, assessment and evaluation strategies; process skills students will have a chance to be involved in creating an efficient lesson plans. In addition to this, by taking this course they will gain knowledge about common errors and misconceptions that students have while learning number and operation concepts.
Course Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
- design a lesson plan by taking into consideration of basics of lesson plan development,
- relate numbers and operations content and process skills in middle school mathematics curriculum to instructional practices,
- select appropriate instructional materials and teaching strategies for instructional process of middle school number concepts,
- choose appropriate assessment and evaluation strategies for instructional process of middle school number concepts,
- examine learning difficulties, misconceptions, general mistakes that students have related to these number concepts,
- implement the planned lessons as a microteaching experience,
- evaluate the effectiveness of microteaching experience by self and collaborative reflection.
