This course aims to provide a critical understanding of contemporary masculinities in relation to historical background of the field, major theories defining masculinity and masculinities, methods employed in current research, and intersection of masculinity with power relations. The content of the course is planned to introduce students the key concepts and topics about masculinity and manhood based on psychological research. The course outlines different approaches highlighting the experience, power relations, self and identity, social construction, threat perception, violence, stress, and anxiety attached to masculinity in different societies. The goal of the course is to make students problematize the contemporary practices of masculinity and how it is built in relation to other people and culture by looking at the current and historical debates. The course further aims to demonstrate students that positive and egalitarian masculinities are attainable.
Students who successfully complete this course will be able to:
- Name the specific domains of traditional masculinity ideology worldwide and in cultural environment of Turkey.
- Describe the relationship between men’s violence against women and LGBTI+ from a critical perspective.
- Develop alternative perspectives to see the role of manhood and masculinity in everyday life practices.
- Outline alternative ways of egalitarian masculinities.
- Formulate critical questions about the mental and physical health problems rooted in traditional masculinity and how they operate in society.
- Argue how social construction and socialization of masculinities relate to gender-based inequalities.
